July 2010
Dear Friends,
Welcome to summer. Isn’t it wonderful to enjoy vacations and the slower pace of summer? Mark reminds us that after the apostles had completed their ministry, Jesus called them to go on vacation and to rest for a while. And Jesus himself took time for rest and prayer. Rest and prayer are clearly God’s intention for us.
God is good.
I hope you’ll get a chance for rest and prayer this summer. If you’re in town, please join us for the rest and prayer you’ll find worshiping at First Presbyterian. If you’re out of town, I encourage you to worship with another congregation, to send greetings on behalf of our church, and, when you return, to share with us what you learned and experienced in another Christian community.
What else is happening here this summer?
Vacation Bible School was a huge success. Our interim Children’s Ministry Director, Carol Vagnini, as well as many volunteers from FPC and other downtown churches, made this a joyous time of learning and growth. Thank you!
The search for our next Christian Educator/Children’s Ministry Director has begun.
The session will be reviewing proposed church goals at its June meeting. Once those goals are approved, they will be shared with the whole congregation.
Emily and the youth and youth leaders are gearing up for a mission trip to Atlanta and for Youth Triennium at Purdue.
One of our seminarians, Ted Sharp, is quoted in the PC(USA) National News (see attached article).
And of one of our members, Dr. Paul Edmiston, has received international attention for a discovery that may help clean up the oil spill in the Gulf–good news for God’s creation and for environmental justice!
We are embarking on the second phase of our stewardship campaign.
The staff and ministry teams are making plans for fall programs at FPC.
And we are resting, praying, worshiping, and being renewed by God.
Yes, God is good.
Peace be with you,
Jeff
